Nobody mentioned the mud. Three a.m. Just finished Exodus. The Egyptians chased, God drowned them, we sang. Always sang. But tonight a detail caught: the mud. Chariot wheels clogged, horses thrashing, men shouting—then water. No one mourned the horses. No one mourned the men either. Just God's vengeance, and Miriam with her tambourine. I've read this my whole life and never once wondered: did those horses have names? Did those men have mothers who woke at three a.m. for the rest of their lives? But that's the logic, isn't it?
